Before You Start

1

Use a metal tape

For accurate measurements

2

Measure in centimetres

This is what we use for your order

3

Measure more than once

Windows and floors are not always perfectly level

4

Check your fittings

Note whether your pole or track is already installed

Do you already have a pole or track fitted?

Yes — my pole or track is fitted

Measure the full usable width of your existing pole or track, then measure the drop from the correct starting point for your heading style.

No — my pole or track is not fitted yet

Choose your intended installation height first and base your measurements on that position. Decide how wide you want the pole or track to extend beyond the window.

Important: We advise not permanently fitting a new pole or track until your curtains are on site.

How to Measure Curtain Width

If your pole or track is already fitted, measure the full usable width from end to end — not the window itself.

If your pole or track is not fitted yet, measure the window width and decide how far you want the pole or track to extend beyond each side. Around 15–20 cm each side is a common starting point, but this can vary depending on the window and how much stack-back you want.

How to Measure Curtain Drop

Pole with rings

Measure from the bottom of the curtain rings to where you want the curtains to finish.

Curtain track

Measure from the hole in the individual gliders to where you want the curtains to finish.

Eyelet curtains

Measure from the top of the pole to where you want the curtains to finish.

Choose Your Finished Length

Sill length

Finishes just above the windowsill

Below sill

Finishes approximately 5–15 cm below the sill

Floor length

Usually finishes around 1–2 cm above the floor

Puddled

Add extra length if you want the fabric to pool on the floor

Common Measuring Mistakes

  • Measuring the window instead of the pole or track
  • Forgetting the intended installation height
  • Measuring only once
  • Fitting new hardware before the curtains arrive
  • Forgetting planned flooring or carpet changes
