How to Measure for Made-to-Measure Roman Blinds
Measuring for a Roman blind is simple once you decide whether it will sit inside or outside the recess. Follow the steps below and, if you’re unsure at any point, send us your measurements and photos and we’ll be happy to check them before you order.

Inside Recess
The blind sits neatly inside the window recess for a clean, tailored look.
Outside Recess
The blind sits outside the recess and overlaps the window, which can help with light control and may suit shallower recesses.
How to Measure for an Inside Recess Roman Blind
Measure the width of the recess at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest measurement.
Measure the drop in three places and use the smallest measurement.
Deduct 1–2 cm from the width and drop so the blind fits neatly inside the recess.
Check for handles, tiles, switches or other obstructions before ordering. If the room is still being finished, remember to allow for future plasterboard or tile thickness.
How to Measure for an Outside Recess Roman Blind
Measure the exact finished width you want the blind to be. For better light control, around 5–10 cm overlap on each side of the window is a useful starting point.
Measure the drop from your intended top fixing point down to the bottom of the sill or wherever you want the blind to finish.
Take your measurements from the finished surfaces wherever possible.
Installation Height
If the blind is being fitted above the recess, choose your intended fixing height before measuring the drop. Consider how much of the window you would like to keep clear when the blind is raised.
Think about whether you want the control chain on the left or right side.
Common Measuring Mistakes
- Measuring only once
- Forgetting handles or other obstructions
- Not allowing for tiles or plasterboard that are still to be fitted
- Choosing an inside-recess fit when the recess is too shallow
- Not allowing enough overlap for an outside-recess blind
- Forgetting to decide the fixing height before measuring
